End of the gardening Season

We got up this morning, and it was winter. At least there was snow on the ground and a very cold wind. This snow might well melt before long. However, in a week or two we should have a snow cover that will last till late March. From a gardener's point of view, this is a very good thing as the soil temperature under a good layer of snow is just at freezing point. Three and a half hours south of here, where we used to garden, when snow melted in a warm spell and then when temperatures plunged many degrees below the freezing point before more snow could fall, perennial plants suffered a lot.

Here are more pictures taken this morning (Saturday).

  1. Even though I dislike snow, it makes a great display and your pictures shows it perfectly. The snow was here last Thursday too... it didn't stay fortunately... Winter will be long : take care

  2. Snowing, snowing, snowing and below freezing here all next week. We do get those evil cold snaps with bare ground; I never considered one could live with snow cover all winter. Either way, not at the top of my list of likes.

  3. Our snow cover is a lot less consistent, with a great deal of freeze/thaw.

  4. Enjoyed those pix. Light snow in November does show off the landscape in a unique way. Here in the snowbelt we probably get more than you, and I really look forward to it. Below zero with snow is a lot better than just above zero with rain as far as I'm concerned - and better for the plants. We got about 6 inches today.

  5. Snow is a very good soil insulator. Widely varying temperatures are a killer. We have 60 cm of snow.

  6. And we complain if the snow hangs about for more than a few days.

  7. A good blanket of snow gladdens a gardener's heart. It's insulation value and beauty help to make up for the inconvenience! Your rill looks especially fetching with a dressing of white.

  8. Happy winter! I know snow is a good insulator for the soil, but what about you? I hope you don't mind snow cover for months on end. I am most definitely not fond of winter, so I'm glad we don't have much snow where I garden.

  10. At least your dinner bell will continue to work all winter.
