Stragglers

Several plants only bloom in October such as the unidentified variety of chrysanthemum below, but just now, most of the flowers left in the garden are stragglers that have not yet been killed by frost. Here are some of the ones that were still hanging on a few days ago.

 Chrysanthemum (unidentified variety)

Purple Hollyhock

Alstroemeria Fabiana
Calceolaria mexicana
"Little Pickles"

Winter Savory

Honeysuckle 'Major Wheeler'
Cosmos
'Viking Queen'

Rudbeckia hybrid
Michaelmas Daisy
Meadow saffron (Colchicum autumnale)
Colchicum agrippinum
Nasturtium
Verbena bonariensis

  1. Autumn flowers are colorful and makes me happy. I'm impressed with the Colchicum. I hope I'll have the chance to see mine clump like yours.
    Bonne soirée

  2. You still have plenty of flowers. When can you expect your weather to turn cold?

    1. We had one light frost already. We could get a killing frost anytime now. It is just a question of chance. Snow however is more reliable. It normally starts to stay on the ground in early December.

  3. Honeysuckle 'Major Wheeler' is gorgeous. Is it scented?

    1. To tell you the truth, I am not sure if it is scented. It has taken a long time to do anything (I have had it for 3-4 years). I might have put it in a spot that gets too wet in spring.

  4. Just a few daisys here, and, of course, the colchium.

    1. These pictures are a bit deceptive. Most of these flowers were the only one or two specimens of their kind still alive. Like the lupine in the last one - a very confused single lupine that thought it was spring!

  5. You have a lot more flowers still in bloom than we do!

    1. It has to do with the peninsula effect. Our frosts are later in the fall because of all the water around us but next spring your tulips will be at least a coupe of weeks ahead of ours because of all the ice that will then surround us!

  6. I'm surprised the nigella is still in full swing; it looks like such a delicate plant. Good show!

    1. It does look delicate but is rather tough. It takes a solid frost to kill it.

  7. You still have quite a few. They seem like brave little soldiers, don't they.

  8. The more stragglers the better don't you think Alain. I do like the colour of the unnamed Chrysanthemum in the first picture and the pink Michaelmas Daisy. Colchicum went over ages ago here nice to see yours blooming now.

  9. Your garden is still blooming Alain. Love your honeysuckle 'Major Wheeler' is not as mine, lovely flowers. My autumn crocus died after first frost and yours are so nice!

  10. Nice to see the spots of colour Alain, Chrysanthemums are so underrated these days for Autumn colour, we tend only to think of the big show types.

    1. Most of the big showy types do not survive our winters. This single pink and yellow one though is tough as nail.

  11. You have some delightful stragglers. That Alstroemeria Fabiana is fabulous and I love your Calceolaria. I am surprised to see that your colchicums are still in bloom. Mine went over ages ago.

    1. I wonder why colchicums bloom so much earlier in Europe. Perhaps they need a specific number of warm days (which they would get earlier than they do here). Blooming time can be puzzling. Reading a blog from France I realized that Catalpas bloom at exactly the same time there as here. You would think they would blooms weeks earlier.

  12. Wow, you do have so many flowers still blooming, and it looks like quite a bit of green foliage, too. Lucky you! Things are fading fast here now in the Upper Midwest.
