End of the gardening Season

We got up this morning, and it was winter. At least there was snow on the ground and a very cold wind. This snow might well melt before long. However, in a week or two we should have a snow cover that will last till late March. From a gardener's point of view, this is a very good thing as the soil temperature under a good layer of snow is just at freezing point. Three and a half hours south of here, where we used to garden, when snow melted in a warm spell and then when temperatures plunged many degrees below the freezing point before more snow could fall, perennial plants suffered a lot.

  1. Even though I dislike snow, it makes a great display and your pictures shows it perfectly. The snow was here last Thursday too... it didn't stay fortunately... Winter will be long : take care

  2. Snowing, snowing, snowing and below freezing here all next week. We do get those evil cold snaps with bare ground; I never considered one could live with snow cover all winter. Either way, not at the top of my list of likes.

  4. Enjoyed those pix. Light snow in November does show off the landscape in a unique way. Here in the snowbelt we probably get more than you, and I really look forward to it. Below zero with snow is a lot better than just above zero with rain as far as I'm concerned - and better for the plants. We got about 6 inches today.

  5. Snow is a very good soil insulator. Widely varying temperatures are a killer. We have 60 cm of snow.

  7. A good blanket of snow gladdens a gardener's heart. It's insulation value and beauty help to make up for the inconvenience! Your rill looks especially fetching with a dressing of white.

  8. Happy winter! I know snow is a good insulator for the soil, but what about you? I hope you don't mind snow cover for months on end. I am most definitely not fond of winter, so I'm glad we don't have much snow where I garden.
